Bowen: We still don’t know enough about Jalen Hurts’ situation, but we know the Eagles organization is reeling & looks incompetent

Bowen: The Eagles went from ‘How did they win this?’ To ‘How did they lose this,’ and nothing good seems to last for this team

Bowen: Eras end, monuments topple, but I really liked it when the Eagles had a great offensive line Original
A long, long time ago, before Lane Johnson retired and Cam Jurgens got traded to Baltimore, I had a pretty good column idea all teed up and ready. I’d listened to Nick Sirianni and Sean Mannion, over and over again, deliver some variation of “it’s not just one thing,” in reference to the offensive struggles of the 2026 Eagles. I was quite sick of hearing this. Of course, it’s rarely just one thing. But that doesn’t help you fix anything.
Taking the Next Step
The Eagles are running a completely new offense as they seek to return to the top tier of Super Bowl contenders in 2026. And for the first time since his rookie season, DeVonta Smith is expected to shoulder the load the Eagles initially projected for him, back when they traded up to 10th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, to nab the Heisman Trophy winner from Alabama. A 10th overall draft pick is supposed to be a focal point, a captain, a star.
Bowen: Hey, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but things aren’t going great for the Eagles. Just FYI
An Eagles team searching desperately for answers is unlikely to find enough of them in a short practice week that ends in a visit from the Los Angeles Rams. Especially if either DeVonta Smith (hamstring) or Zack Baun (concussion) can’t play. That’s my thinking after taking a few days to mull the team’s Monday Night Meltdown against the Chicago Bears, and after hearing Nick Sirianni, his coordinators, and several players reflect on where the team stands. This is not the hottest of takes. I am aware.
Bowen: Maybe the Eagles could just try to be normal, for once?

Bowen: I have questions — Where have you gone, Landon Dickerson? And isn’t this really A.J. Brown’s fault?
I blame A.J. Brown. Why? We’ll circle back to that. In the wake of the Eagles‘ 24-22 season opening slog past the visiting Washington Commanders, there was one guy I wanted to hear from in the postgame locker room. It wasn’t Jalen Hurts, Dallas Goedert, Quinyon Mitchell, Moro Ojomo, Jalen Carter, Riq Woolen or Zack Baun, all of whom made enormous plays that helped the home team narrowly escape an embarrassing loss. I wanted to hear from Landon Dickerson.
Bowen: I don’t think even the Eagles know how Sean Mannion’s offense is going to look
The fact that Sean Mannion is going to call plays from the coaches’ box this Sunday does not bother me. It did bother me a little, sitting down to write this on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, when I realized that the Eagles‘ offensive coordinator was nine years old that day. Then I started thinking about how Mannion was playing in the league as recently as 2023, and that led to me thinking about who some of his teammates might have been.
Jalen Hurts’ GQ interview shows us an Eagles QB who was never going to accede to A.J. Brown’s focus on personal goals Original
There’s a new Jalen Hurts piece out from GQ that all the cool kids are talking about. I promise not to go off on a long, boring tangent about how there was a time, long ago, when access to top players was a lot easier for the local writer-folk, and seeing that a guy you talked to all the time had sat down with a national publication might merit mention in your notes, if at all. But times have indeed changed.
Bowen: A.J. Brown stuff is great fun, but Vic Fangio said something at Eagles-Pats joint practice that might actually matter Original
In a month or so, I don’t think anyone will still care what A.J. Brown said or did during these joint training camp practices between the Eagles and the Patriots. I doubt anyone will still be referencing anything Jalen Hurts or Devonta Smith had to say about Brown, on an August day in Foxborough, Mass. Someone did say something Wednesday that might matter in a month, though. It was Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
Bowen: Lane Johnson’s journey to Eagles franchise icon was not the smoothest Original
Lane Johnson’s announcement Saturday that this probably will be his last NFL season brought up more than a few memories. His has been quite a journey — from junior college quarterback to best right tackle in Eagles history, with two Super Bowl rings. Johnson is a certainty for the franchise’s Hall of Fame, and I think he ought to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well, as the best right tackle of his era.
Jalen Hurts is putting his money on Jalen Carter; Howie Roseman and the Eagles organization, even more so Original
Jalen Hurts’ wife put a five-dollar bill in his backpack when the Eagles’ quarterback reported for training camp Tuesday. We don’t know why – after the first workout of camp Wednesday, Hurts told reporters it was “an inside joke.” Hurts brought it up because he said he’d arrived at the team facility Tuesday, and he’d learned defensive tackle Jalen Carter had agreed to a reported four-year, $152 million contract extension, with $106 million in guarantees.

On the first day of Eagles training camp, Jalen Hurts lofted a pass down the left sideline toward A.J. Brown. Cornerback Kelee Ringo played the ball perfectly. Ringo, basically linked arm-in-arm with the Eagles’ premier receiver, looked back at just the right moment to deflect or intercept. Except that Brown then shouldered Ringo aside, reaching over him to pluck the ball cleanly before stepping out of bounds.
