Social media is aflutter about a new study in Nature Communications . It found that certain enzymes can block the result of glycation , an aging process in which sugars are bound to proteins. Many skin care products say they can block glycation, but they cannot. Scientists have not been able to reverse glycation and clear Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs) until now.

Given the longevity of this column (for which I am grateful) and its focus on botanical sources, it may be surprising that we have not once featured the largest family of flowering plants, Orchidaceae, which includes more than 35,000 species and 850 genera. Surely, one might think, the largest family of flowering plants must have some role in providing ingredients that have the potential for dermatologic applications.

Miami's sun-soaked lifestyle is great for the soul, but it's unfortunately not so great for your skin. Dermatologists have a name for the low-grade, chronic inflammation that drives much of what we call “aging”: inflammaging. When the skin becomes inflamed, it sets off a chain reaction. Harmful molecules called free radicals show up, certain enzymes start breaking down collagen and the immune system is activated. All of that together wears down the skin and speeds up aging.
