Certificates of Confidentiality and Mandatory Reporting
Certificates of Confidentiality and Mandatory Reporting Experts agree that child sexual abuse is preventable and that research is essential to identifying effective prevention strategies and improving the health and well-being of children.1 However, such research necessarily requires researchers to ask research participants—both children and adults—about their sexual abuse and perpetration experiences.
Constitutional Confidentiality
Abstract Federal Certificates of Confidentiality (“Certificates”) protect sensitive information about human research subjects from disclosure and use in judicial, administrative, and legislative proceedings at both the state and federal levels. When they were first authorized by Congress in the 1970s, Certificates covered sensitive information collected in research about drug addiction use. Today, however, they extend to virtually all personal information gathered by biomedical research studies.

If we don't own our genes, what protects study subjects in genetic research?
On February 25, the White House hosted a forum on the National Institute of Health’s Precision Medicine Initiative. This is an ambitious research study that aims to develop targeted drugs and treatments that would vary from individual to individual. To reach the goal of eventually being able to make specific recommendations for patients based on their own combination of genes, environment and lifestyle, researchers plan to collect that kind of information from one million Americans.
