Columbus police hold crisis training for officers as mental health call response improves

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Columbus police said specialized training is helping its officers better respond to calls involving someone experiencing a mental health crisis. On Wednesday, about 100 officers participated in Crisis Intervention Teams training on how to identify signs of mental illness and substance abuse, and the skills to work with someone in crisis. Just in the last year, Columbus police took more than 23,000 mental health-related calls for service.
