How is social media changing news?
In every single way. It demonstrates the reality that "the news" is not limited to traditional outlets.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Kindly and enthusiastically.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I make great use of Obsidian, an open-source notetaking tool that allows me to link ideas together and pull up old research on a dime.
What's your favorite social network?
None of them rise to the top, yet.
Why did you become a journalist?
Out of necessity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the institutional media failed to ask the hard questions, so I stepped into the breach.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be curious. If you've got that, you're already most of the way there. At that point, it's just about putting pen to paper.
When's the best time to pitch you?
No set time. Experiment and see what I respond to.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
It's less about content and more about form. I occasionally get Substack links forwarded to me without context, which generally isn't useful!
What's your favorite drink?
Non-alcoholic beer. And coffee!
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I couldn't pick just one, but I love long-form investigative pieces like are published by The Corbett Report and Unlimited Hangout.
