Opinion: When will enough be enough ...?
Thus far in 2026, there have been 380 mass shootings — 350 people have lost their lives and 1,600 have been injured. In the latest shooting, a father with his concealed weapon killed the 16-year-old assassin before more were murdered. The 16-year-old had a long gun and a lot of ammunition. The blood bath could have been worse. The number of rifles, handguns, AR-15s are in so many homes, they could arm the military. Some people reinforce their floors to carry their gun safes.
Lib Campbell: It’s about time leaders stopped worrying about Daylight Savings Time Original
On Nov. 1, 2026, we will “fall back,” setting our clocks back one hour to end Daylight Savings Time this year. Daylight Savings Time began globally July 1, 1908. Opinion: It’s about time
On Nov. 1, we will “fall back,” setting our clocks back one hour to end Daylight Savings Time this year. Daylight Savings Time began globally July 1, 1908. It gave more daylight for fighting World War I. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 established Daylight Savings Time by an act of Congress, setting the method for when DST would begin and end. Arizona and Hawaii are the only states who do not participate in the time change. Get ready to fall back.
Opinion: When the genie gets out
Artificial Intelligence is so powerful now that it is generating additional intelligence on its own. Sam Altman, Anthropic and others are weighing in on the problem. While AI is a boon to many, it is not benign. One glitch could unleash havoc that would be catastrophic to humankind, animals and all creation. All living things could disappear within the next couple of decades. Sounds dystopian, but it is not out of the realm of possibility for life to go the way of the dinosaur.
Opinion: Those things undone
There are things in life that are hard to reconstruct once they are destroyed. A marriage is one. Infidelity is devastating to a marriage. Even worse than a divorce, which rips a family apart, infidelity is dirty dealing and cowardly as participants cannot find words or conscience to address the real problems that might exist between a husband and wife. Plastic surgery is another thing that, once done, is almost impossible to fix.
Lib Campbell: The skewering of Anthony Fauci - Salisbury Post
We wonder how low the Trump Administration will go with the revenge campaign we are seeing against Dr. Anthony Fauci. Sen. Rand Paul summoned Dr. Fauci with the nefarious intent of skewering him about his decisions during the COVID pandemic. Paul seemed greatly delighted to have gotten Dr. Fauci’s personal journal, where the good doctor had written some of his reflections about how he had acted in the pandemic.
Opinion: Deregulating gun control is bad for America Original
As Donald Trump’s polls and popularity drop, as he is losing his MAGA base and a war he started in Iran, so he drops regulations on guns. Nothing says "I love you" like an AR-15. Bump stocks and rights for the mentally ill are in. To hell with gun control, it’s full steam ahead. And don’t go to Glenwood South in Raleigh at night without a flak jacket. The number of guns in America remains staggering. There are a reported 393 million civilian firearms in the United States, some 120.5 per 100 people.
Opinion: Life in the gray
A woman came into our Sunday school class sometime in the 1970s with a book titled “Out of the Gray into the Black and White.” The book was a response to the postmodern concept of “no absolutes.” She wanted the absolute. She wanted the assurance that all would be stable and predictable. She especially wanted answers that agreed with what she thought. The events of 1970 were raucous. Apollo 12 excitement. The Beatles broke up. America was in the final years of the Vietnam War.
Opinion: Sing a new song, Donald
Dear Donald, the jig is up. You have no ideas, no strategy, no vision. You have revealed you are not very smart and are uninterested in becoming better informed. Perhaps it is because you got rid of all the people around who might have advised you better. Perhaps your hubris is so overwhelming you can’t listen to anybody anymore. You have become very dangerous in the world, and the world is paying for your lunacy.
Opinion: MAGA coalition fraying at the edges
The war in Iran, started by Donald Trump, is raging with no end in sight. Prices around the world are escalating. Gasoline prices in America are so high that regular people are struggling to make ends meet, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics just reported that over the past 12 months, inflation is now at a seasonally adjusted 3.8%, well above the 2% target. Instead of strategizing how to get us out of the mess Trump created, he is obsessed with his big, beautiful ballroom.
Opinion: Time to invoke the 25th Amendment
In the aftermath of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, legislation was passed that would permit Congress to remove a president who was deemed unfit for office. It became the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It is time for the Cabinet and our Congress to act and remove Donald Trump from office. With the war he started in Iran, he has created an existential threat for the world.
Opinion: A beautiful day indeed
Fred Rogers is remembered for being the fatherly figure on PBS encouraging the best of children and parents to live in neighborly ways that create a productive and happy life. Our lived experience proves that neighborhood still functions as a joyful gathering place for a Sunday afternoon. Neighbors recently brought lawn chairs and spent two hours laughing, catching up and eating. It was a great community-building event.
Opinion: A new day
Listening to a podcast by three smart spiritual leaders, I have found myself again. I am a person of faith who, for the last few years, has been swept away in the dysfunction of our government and the lunacy of our president. I realize that I cannot change this situation. Here is what I can do. I can wake up in prayer for the world. I can have coffee on the porch, read the paper, talk with Tom. I can watch the dogs frolic and play. Giving ugliness power over me is not making me happier or better.
Commentary: Battling president waging war with Pope
Evidently the war in Iran was not enough. Now Donald Trump is waging war with the Pope. God is not amused and the two-thirds of Americans who did not vote for Donald Trump are appalled. Trump is a pariah among us. He shatters norms, silences the press and behaves like he is king of the world. kAmw6 42==65 E96 !@A6 2 “=:36C2=” 7@C 9:D EC62E>6?E @7 :>>:8C2?ED 2?5 A6@A=6 @7 4@=@C] !@A6 {6@ 6G6? Just when we thought we’d hit bottom
Evidently, the war in Iran was not enough. Now Donald Trump is waging war with the pope. God is not amused, and the two thirds of Americans who did not vote for Donald Trump are appalled. Trump is a pariah among us. He shatters norms, silences the press and behaves like he is king of the world. He called the pope a “liberal” for his treatment of immigrants and people of color. Pope Leo even welcomed the marginalized. Imagine that. Trump’s behavior is beyond the pale.
God has work for us to do
On nationwide television, Donald Trump looked sad and pathetic. He failed at justifying the unjustifiable war in Iran. He looked and sounded weak and old. Everybody knows how critical of Trump I am. This time, I just felt sad. Sad for him that he has few true friends and allies. Sad for America that we have three more years of this. Sad for a world that has lost the America we have been. Not having love and not having a moral center shapes a person. Their full human potential is undeveloped.
Saving whose America?
The power grabs are coming from all directions now. Unprovoked war is raging in Iran. Gasoline prices are escalating rapidly. MAGA Republicans are gaining steam, realizing nobody is going to stop them. The so-called SAVE America Act has passed the House but is stalled in the Senate. Good thing. If you have read it, you see how it could disenfranchise large groups of people. Especially women and people of color.
Who is running the country?
One does not need to be clairvoyant to recognize that Donald Trump is cognitively impaired to the point he is incapable of leading America. His decision to wage war in Iran is reckless. Seeing him raise money on the flag-draped coffins of young soldiers is despicable. How far is the MAGA crowd willing to blindly follow him on his imperial quest for domination in the world? MAGA runs deep in our government.
What is war good for?
I haven’t expected much of Donald Trump. He has always been a grifter, bamboozler, predator and cheater. His sexual escapades are well documented. He has a civil judgment for at least one of them. Trump is working to keep the Epstein files under wraps. Who knows what stories they will reveal? The egregious miscalculation of the attack on Iran is proving deadly. Does he think he can bomb a sovereign nation — no matter how heinous it might be — and go completely unnoticed?
Send in the clowns
Judy Collins’ 1975 song “Send in the Clowns” is a classic. It speaks into the foolishness of humanity, ultimately acknowledging that the clowns are already present. We have clowns in spades! Question is, will democracy survive the clown show of the Trump administration? Anne Applebaum, David French and Tim Snyder say we will survive, but we will be forever altered. The depth and breadth of the Trump administration’s damage will be hard to clean up.
Commentary: ‘Bluster,’ ‘bragging’ overwhelms as prices rise
An hour of the bluster and bragging was all I could stand. I felt sad seeing this morally broken man dish garbage to the American people. We turned television off and got a glass of wine to chill out. We who live in America and go to the grocery store and the gas station know prices are high. Food prices are increasing. Heating and electricity are too. The state of the union I live in is teetering under autocratic leadership that is seemingly impossible to stop.
State of the union: Teetering

Thank you, SCOTUS
In our upside-down world, the Supreme Court’s ruling on the issue of tariffs is a refreshing turn. Perhaps this is the point where the wrecking ball that is Donald Trump will be slowed in his tracks. He thought the Supreme Court was in his pocket, like the Congress and the Cabinet. But, alas, finally, we have a resounding “No!” Little by little, tides are turning and courage is being found. Unless Trump lawlessly manipulates the high court, the brakes are slowing him down.
Pam Bondi was arrogant and downright rude in Senate hearing Original
Feb. 20, 2026, 5:08 a.m. ET Pam Bondi's conduct during a Senate Judiciary Committee appearance was insolent, arrogant and downright rude, writes Lib Campbell. US immigration policies and ICE show cruelty. We need moral clarity and unity, not divisive political behavior. When I receive a phone call from an unknown caller my phone screen reads, “potential spam.” I don’t answer because I expect it to be a con or a scam. I would be a sucker to be dragged into such a mess.
Pam spam
When I receive a phone call from an unknown caller, my phone screen reads “potential spam.” I don’t answer because I expect it to be a con or a scam. I would be a sucker to be dragged into such a mess. Pam Bondi dragged us into a con with her recent appearance before the Judiciary Committee of the Senate. She was insolent, arrogant and downright rude in talking to the senators. The one thing she did do was reveal just how deeply embedded the MAGA movement is in U.S. government.
How low can he go?
Not talking about a party game here. I am talking about the meme Donald Trump delighted in sending out on social media during the Super Bowl game. How can anyone, even the most MAGA of you, think portraying the Obamas as chimps was OK? That our morally bankrupt, convicted sexual predator, twice impeached, Jeffery Epstein-loving president thinks this is a good idea should disgust and repel all of us. Trump’s mental decline is on full display now. He has a hard time processing clear thought.
Say cheese: Witnesses record ICE’s brutality
Thanks to modern technology, Americans who have cellphones also have cameras. People are wise to behave themselves because our pictures could end up on TikTok or Instagram. Privacy is a thing of the past. Video evidence shared broadly on mainstream media is telling the story. An untrained mob calling itself ICE is policing and arresting citizens, striking fear among us and dancing to the tune of our mad king, Donald Trump.
Let’s get real
Most of us went to high school. Some of us went to college. Mrs. Boyette was the history teacher in my tiny Ayden High School. She taught history. Linear teaching. Dates. Years. Places. Our first trip we took to Italy, I kept a journal of places and people we met. I remembered Mrs. Boyette’s teaching and gave thanks for her and high school Principal Faust Johnson who hired her. On one of our trips to Italy, we visited the monastery of Saint Benedict. We saw the fountain and the Pitti Palace.
Western imperialism
Imperialism is system of colonization in which stronger nations — those with money and armies — invade smaller, weaker nations for the purpose of exploiting resources like land and minerals. Great Britian colonized the Western Hemisphere for vast land, agricultural and other resources previously untapped by the Spanish conquistadors who had come to places like Saint Augustine and California.
Where do we even begin?
There is so much buffoonery it is even hard knowing where to start. We could start with the capture of Venezuela. Illegal seizure of a sovereign state should be a point that concerns every American. I don’t care if Maduro is a bad actor. We have our own share of those, and nobody is coming across our borders to capture The Donald. Sending American troops to Venezuela would be a grievous act, not too unlike May Lai. Vietnam was a great teacher of what not to do in warfare.
Can we talk about the transfer portal?
Everybody knows that college athletic programs bring in large revenues for their universities. Young college athletes are a crucial part of that revenue stream. For many years, housing and an education were reward enough for playing a sport in college. Several years ago, the transfer portal came into being. The portal evolved alongside name, image and likeness, or NIL, deals. Athletes realized that without them, there would be no athletics in school.
A happy New Year is on the way
One day last week, I used Google just to make sure to make sure Donald Trump was still president. Sadly, he was. The only good news is that in January, he will officially be a lame duck. There is little Donald Trump can do to change that. Except bellyache. Unless he pulls one over on us, the midterm elections will result in a blue wave of elected Democrats. If he doesn’t have a MAGA majority in one or both houses of Congress, it will be interesting to see how Trump responds.
Memories from a female ‘sports junkie’
My love of football started when I was in middle school. Daddy was the “play-by play” announcer for the Ayden High School Tornadoes. My brother, who was skinny, played tight end. More often than not, he warmed the bench. I was a cheerleader in high school. In those days, our pleated skirts touched the tops of our bobby socks. I learned the “push them back,” “hold that line,” “hey, hey, hey, hey, let’s go,” cheers and actually started learning the game. The football players were friends.
Don’t act as if we didn’t see it
Come on, Pete. Do you think we are blind and stupid? Isn’t that your job? What kind of delusion does this MAGA lot live in? Habitation of silliness abounds. From Botox Noem to blonde Barbie Leavitt, we are not being governed by mature people who take democracy seriously. The covert operation of Caribbean homicide was carried out under no cloak. It was unclassified and unclassy to say the least. We all saw it. Your denial is yet more stupidity! Holy freaking cow! Is this who we are becoming?

In the presence of holiness
The room fills with Presence as a holy friend sits and talks. She is gentle in spirit. We talk all things faith — Julien of Norwich, Teresa of Avilla. We talk of the church and of the culture, and cultural trends. We talk about how we see the world living out the imperatives of justice and love. How are we failing? What is the state of things we see happening around us?

He recently observed to parliament that 80% of the city's predatory crime like robbery is committed by "foreigners". That is not to say by tourists or business travelers from abroad. Lib Campbell: As the screws turn
Imagine a bucket full of wood cockroaches being thrown into a burning fire. The little brown bodies writhe and crackle and begin to fall apart. This is the scene we are watching in Washington. The end game is cracking and folding. Like a game of Jenga, one by one the blocks are being pulled out until – Voila – the whole tower tumbles.
