Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
High school newspaper reporter and editor-in-chief.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Absolutely. Way back to the IBM days, where each letter had a different character count. (Ugh.)
How is social media changing news?
Social media is the essential distribution platform for news, and often a great source of information and sources as well.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
The cast of "His Girl Friday," which is frankly hilarious.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It's hard to describe what you are a cellular level. I'm interested in the story-behind-the-story, cracking the code, what makes people tick.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I'd prefer not to be.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I'm a huge fan of graph paper (quadrille), mindmaps, Evernote, and the Olympus tape recorder.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter for the intel; Facebook for the relationships.
Who do you wish followed you?
@rschooley, but I'm getting tired of waiting.
Why did you become a journalist?
Uncovering the story and telling the story are immensely satisfying ways to connect with the human experience we all share.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
As a sophomore, I was elected editor-in-chief. We won both the high school journalism competitions, with perfect scores in writing, editing.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
As journalists we often say, it's our last one. But in this case, my last one (on homeless women veterans) broke new ground.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
There will have to be new ways to monetize using your skills and telling the story, because the old ones are falling apart.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Never. I like to come up with my own ideas, and thanks to my HealingCombatTrauma.com site, my inbox is always full of unrelated pitches.
