The day I walked up that stage in first grade to receive a silver medal changed how people viewed me. Family, friends and relatives all told me that I’d excel in school, and I believed them. I believed them too much, I let it engulf me. Years after that, I never failed to gain a position in the top five of my class. I never failed to qualify for any competition, and I never failed to be one of the best. Praise from teachers, validation on a piece of paper. That’s all it took to make me feel complete.
