When the International Booker Prize committee awarded this year’s prize to Yang Shuang-zi’s Taiwan Travelogue it continued a laudable tradition of diversity. In the eleven years since its relaunch in 2016, the prize has gone to books translated from eleven different languages. Taiwan Travelogue, a Chinese-language novel brought to the English-reading public in a thoughtful translation by Lin King, is the prize’s first Chinese-language recipient.

Taiwan Travelogue opens, almost prophetically, with a misunderstanding, the easiest of the many misunderstandings that await its two protagonists. Aoyama Chizuko, a celebrated Japanese novelist on a government-sponsored lecture tour in Taiwan, deliberately strays into a bustling market instead of waiting at the station where she is meant to be picked up. Curious and impulsive, she ends up bickering with a teenage vendor whose language she cannot understand.
