Monday, 12 April 2021 Are the robots coming for garment workers? As far back as the early 19th century, the Luddites took to breaking the factory machinery that threatened to replace them in violent protests which ended only after mill and factory owners called in the British Army. Fast forward two centuries and… Friday, 09 April 2021 Death knell sounded for Chinese cotton?
Wearing the World Out
Close Okay, so the funny thing about recording a podcast from your home during a quarantine, is that you might end up spending a lot of time in your closet. It may seem strange, but you get the best sound in a small room with lots of padding. So, the reason I’m telling you this, is because today’s episode is about clothes. And there’s no better place to talk about them than here, in my very full, very disorganized closet. The thing is, I love shopping. Shopping makes me feel good. It’s exciting.

No More Excuses, Corporate America: The Future Is Now
Well! In times awash with nothing but bad bad bad news on environmental matters, I have some very positive news to share from China. My favorite environmental NGO in that country, the Institute for Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE), has just released its annual Green Supply Chain report—which is a mind blower.
#whomademyclothes?
A shout out to the activist group Fashion Revolution, which today, on the fifth anniversary of the Rana Plaza disaster, is encouraging millions of people to ask their favorite brands #whomademyclothes and demand greater transparency in the fashion supply chain. I just signed Fashion Revolution’s manifesto and urge you to do the same by clicking here. But I have to tell you, it is not just we customers who are in the dark on this subject.
Threatened Big Cats in the Spotlight for World Wildlife Day
By Debbie BanksI recently had the privilege of being one of the preliminary judges for the International Big Cats Film Festival, the winners of which will be announced on March 2.
Judge Allows Trump to Waive Environmental Laws to Build Border Wall
A federal judge in San Diego ruled Tuesday that the Trump administration can waive a slew of environmental laws and other regulations to build the president's highly vaunted U.S.-Mexico border wall in California. Federal laws waived by the Department of Homeland Security for construction of a border wall include the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Air Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the Antiquities Act and many more.
New Report Promotes Need for Fashion Industry Action
By Linda GreerThe fashion industry doesn't necessarily have the biggest nose-to-the-grindstone, follow-the-numbers reputation of an industry, let's face it. It is better known for its creativity, innovation and trendsetting. But this sector packs a major punch environmentally, let me tell you—in terms of climate impact, water use and pollution.
Rising Temperatures Imperil Winter Sports Industry
By Celia GurneyIt's hard to imagine feeling a purer joy than American snowboarder Chloe Kim as she flings herself into a 1080, but Olympic athletes aren't the only ones who love winter sports. In the winter of 2015 and 2016, more than 20 million people took part in downhill skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling in the U.S.But, there are no winter sports without winter weather, and humans are on track to warm winter into oblivion.
EU-Wide Ban on Bee-Harming Pesticides Likely After Major Review
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded in a new assessment that "most uses" of three widely used neonicotinoids—imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiamethoxam—pose a risk to wild bees and honeybees, which play a crucial role in pollination across the globe. The conclusion, based on analysis of more than 1,500 studies, will likely prompt a total ban on the pesticides from all fields across the European Union when the issue comes to a vote next month, the Guardian reported.
Republicans in Congress Flunk Environment and Public Health Report Card With Average Grade of 1%
Congressional Republican lawmakers have set record lows on the 2017 League of Conservation Voters (LCV) scorecard, released Tuesday. The LCV, which has been scoring lawmakers' actions on environment, public health and climate issues for nearly 50 years, awarded Senate Republicans a record low average 1 percent score, with 46 Senators receiving a score of zero—meaning "they voted against the environment and public health at every opportunity" in 2017.

Climate Change, Conflict Leave 224 Million Undernourished in Africa
An official with the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warns that climate change and conflict are leading to food insecurity for millions of people living in Africa. "Undernourishment appears to have risen from about 21 percent to nearly 23 percent between 2015 and 2016," Bukar Tijani, FAO's assistant director general for Africa, said Monday at a conference in Sudan. "Over the same period, the number of undernourished rose from 200 million to 224 million in Africa.
The Need for Sustainable Fashion
Marie Claire magazine’s latest issue, which just hit the newsstand, focuses on an issue near and dear to my heart: sustainable fashion. The magazine’s nearly 1 million readers will get a glimpse into the huge health and environmental problems associated with clothing production and what consumers and fashion brands can do about it.
A Huge Step for Clean By Design
Mention the fashion houses of Gucci, Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, and Bottega Veneta and for sure the first thing that pops into your mind is gorgeous. NOT environmental sustainability. But this week, just following Fashion Week in Milan, these companies and their brethren in the Kering Group can take a well-deserved bow—or should I say a strut down the runway—for excellence in environmental stewardship. What did they do to deserve these kudos?
Multinational Corporations and Supply Chain Responsibility
Earlier this fall marked the release of the 3rd annual report card on supply chain responsibility from our colleagues at the Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs (IPE). The report card, called the Corporate Information Transparency Index (CITI) [1], ranks companies on how well they track and respond to pollution emitted from factories in their supply chains in China. The CITI Top 30 list has emerged as the who’s who list of brands in the supply chain game.
Why I am a fan of Carbon Disclosure Project's latest report
Coming on the heels of Paris, the Carbon Disclosure Project has just put out its 2016 report "From Agreement to Action: Mobilizing Suppliers toward a Climate Resilient World". CDP has the biggest carbon reporting program going, generating information that the financial world and the public can use to evaluate multinational corporate performance on carbon reductions.
Allons! Post Paris
Much has been written about the constructive role that corporations played in the COP 21 climate negotiations in Paris last month; many companies had strenuously opposed previous efforts to negotiate a treaty, but this round, the private sector was much more supportive. Many companies even came to the COP with meaningful and specific commitments for reducing their own carbon footprint.
Multinational corporations and supply chain responsibility: Who is stepping up on pollution from manufacturing, and who hopes you will pay no attention? | Linda Greer's Blog | Switchboard, from NRDC
I'm in Tianjin, China today for the second annual Corporate Information Transparency Index (CITI) grades, which the Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs (IPE) released today. The CITI ranks companies on how well they track and respond to pollution coming from factories in their supply chains. NRDC collaborated on the criteria that make up the grading system, and we co-authored the report (warning: the loading speed is a little slow at the moment).
Volkswagen takes down corporate social responsibility in its plunge to the bottom of the sea
A few quotes from the latest 156 page VW Corporate Social Report from 2014: Knowing what we now know has been going on in the company for many years, the irony of some statements in the report seem ready for Hollywood. Volkswagen brags about its "development of new software solutions that...open up additional business opportunities for our company" on page 13.
Seamless Growth Ahead for NRDC's Clean by Design
As a scientist who has committed her life to advancing public health and protecting the environment, the last place I ever thought I'd appear is in Vanity Fair's September Style issue. But somehow, someway, here we are. The good folks at Vanity Fair graciously decided to feature me in the issue because of NRDC's Clean By Design program, an initiative I started six years ago to address the environmental impacts of the fashion industry abroad by greening its supply chain.

Fashion Revolution Day 2015
Today around the world, we are commemorating the tragedy at Rana Plaza, Bangladesh, where over 1,000 garment workers lost their lives after the building where they worked collapsed around them. Fashion Revolution Day was created to remind us of that day and raise consumer awareness about the continuing problems - both environmental and labor - associated with the fashion industry.
A banner day for reducing pollution in China
Greetings from Shanghai! Today, NRDC is hosting a big award ceremony for 33 Chinese textile mills which completed NRDC's Clean By Design program in 2014. Our new report summarizes the awesome achievements this group of factories delivered to Planet Earth as well as to their own bottom line. 2014 was our first scale up year following the successful pilot phase of Clean by Design, and the program has proven stellar.
