His thoughts drifted back to the travelers he’d talked to last year. They’d been to China, where they’d seen a thumb-sized container filled with something that looked like a black powder and which flamed and sizzled and made a fearsome noise when it was set on fire. He’d been doubtful at first, but he’d since read books that confirmed their words.

The year was 1872, and 20-year-old scout Martha Jane Cannary was riding ahead of Captain Egan and the troops as they headed back to the fort at Goose Creek, Wyoming. Cra-a-a-ck! Martha Jane’s horse whinnied at the sound of the shot. Cra-a-a-ck! Cra-a-a-ck! Martha Jane whirled around in time to see Captain Egan take a hit. He jerked backward in the saddle, slumped and slowly slid from his mount. By now the attacking American Indians were swooping down from the hills, firing as they charged.

Wimberg is a man who has always loved the outdoors. After college, he ran two photography businesses in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, specializing in whitewater float trips and skiing. But after a few years, he realized he wanted something different. “I wanted to see the world a bit more,” says Wimberg.
