WE THE PEOPLE: Allen County Library StoryScape program promotes fun learning

“It is a very special place,” said Rachael King, StoryScape staff member. The StoryScape program uses stories to engage children and allows them to explore the space independently. It is free for children age seven and younger, and no library card is required. A recent $5,000 donation from the Friends of the Library Foundation has helped fund several items, including fabric tiles, a dollhouse and puzzles for the hands-on learning program.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - U.S. medical experts say African Americans experience more heart health problems than people of any other race — something a Fort Wayne nonprofit is working to address. The African American Health Alliance was formed in 2001 when a nursing sorority and a medical-dental association, which had been holding fundraisers for Fort Wayne students interested in the health field since the mid-1990s, merged into a single nonprofit.

WE THE PEOPLE: Kate’s Kart brings books to hospitalized children across northeast Indiana

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A nonprofit that started in a family’s home has grown to deliver hundreds of thousands of books to hospitalized children across northeast Indiana. Kate’s Kart was founded in 2008 by Krista and Andy Layman to honor their daughter Katherine, who died at 18 months after battling a serious heart defect. Today, the organization operates 42 carts in 25 hospitals across 15 northeast Indiana counties. It provides 4,000 books monthly to children from birth to 18 years old.
