‘Fishing garden’ holds a lifetime of memories

FOR most people, Double Island Point is a fishing destination. For Victoria Point resident Ron Ruhland, it is much more than that. The 80-year-old describes the waters off the iconic Queensland headland as his “fishing garden” – a place that has provided adventure, friendship, close calls and countless fish over a lifetime on the water. So special is the location that Mr Ruhland hopes one day his ashes will be scattered there.

Final farewell for Redlands pioneer and philanthropist Dan Holzapfel

THE Redlands community will farewell one of its most respected pioneers this week with the funeral of philanthropist and former Redland Shire councillor Dan Holzapfel expected to draw a standing-room-only crowd. The service will be held at Mt Cotton Lutheran Church at 10am on Wednesday, July 1, with multiple dignitaries expected to attend, including Rotary Foundation chairman Mark Anderson, who will travel from Sydney. Mr Holzapfel died of natural causes on June 20 at the age of 103.

Island move brings new angle on life and fishing for Macleay angler

WHEN Paul Hollingdale moved to Macleay Island four years ago, he had to relearn familiar waters from a very different perspective. This time fishing the southern end of Moreton Bay rather than the northern grounds he once knew well. A former volunteer with Marine Rescue at Sandgate, Mr Hollingdale said the transition required a practical reset. “Thank goodness for GPS,” he said. For Mr Hollingdale, 65, the move was not his first experience of a literal sea change.
