2023 - Defending The Disadvantaged

1st Place: Lionel Ramos | Oklahoma Watch “Why Some Afghan Refugees in Oklahoma Live In Squalor” From the first sentence, the writer shows in gruesome but true detail the hardship faced by refugees, backing it up with interviews of the exploited and people trying to help them, along with official records to provide data showing how widespread this problem is. The resettlement may have started with good intentions, but it's clear from this reporting that charities and the government lacked what was needed to accommodate so many refugees so fast. It will be interesting to see follow-up stories on this matter.
