Abstract Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging crystalline porous polymers, showing great potential for applications but lacking gas-triggered flexibility. Atropisomerism was experimentally discovered in 1922 but has rarely been found in crystals with infinite framework structures. Here we report atropisomerism in COF single crystals.
In 1986, the synthesis and preliminary characterization of a new semicrystalline polymer, syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS), was reported in a Macromolecules communication authored by Nobuhide Ishihara, Takeshi Seimiya, Masahiko Kuramoto, and Michitake Uoi at the Idemitsu Kosan Co.(1) A follow-up 1988 Macromolecules article(2) detailed the single-site coordination polymerization catalysis enabling its synthesis.
It’s no secret the middle class is shrinking. Over 8 million good jobs with stable, middle-class incomes disappeared in America during the Great Recession, and over 70% of jobs recovered have not come with the pay or the stability that supports a middle class lifestyle. And it’s not just America that’s suffering–several European countries have been on the brink of economic collapse in the past 7 years due to devastatingly high unemployment.
