CMV infection can pass from mother to baby during pregnancy. Here's how to prevent it
Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain Pregnant women are routinely advised to avoid certain soft cheeses and take care when handling cat litter because of the risk of harmful infections. Far fewer are told not to share food, drinks or utensils with young children, or to wash their hands after changing diapers or wiping noses. Sex Ratios at Birth Following Non‐Invasive Prenatal Testing in Victoria, Australia
1 Introduction In the decade and a half since its introduction, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) has become rapidly adopted as part of prenatal screening in many countries. NIPT is now being offered through public healthcare systems in several countries, with more likely to follow [1].
We studied over 160,000 pregnancies to show how your postcode affects you and your baby Original
Where a woman lives can shape her health during pregnancy as much as her own medical history, our new study suggests. We looked at more than 163,000 pregnancies across Melbourne and found living in a neighbourhood dominated by fast-food outlets and with few healthy food options was strongly linked to indicators of poorer health for both mother and baby. This included the mother being overweight going into pregnancy or having gestational diabetes, and babies born much larger than average.
A GP guide to preventing congenital CMV
Need to know: Cytomegalovirus is a common herpesvirus that typically causes no symptoms or complications in healthy, immunocompetent individuals. However, if a woman acquires CMV during pregnancy, vertical transmission may occur, potentially leading to serious sequelae in the developing fetus. These may include fetal brain damage, hydrops, anaemia, stillbirth or neonatal death. Long-term outcomes include sensorineural hearing loss, developmental delay, epilepsy and cerebral palsy.
Non-invasive prenatal testing: an overview
SUMMARY Australian health authorities recommend offering prenatal screening for fetal chromosome conditions, also known as aneuploidies (e.g. Down syndrome [trisomy 21]), to all pregnant individuals to support informed decision-making. Noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is one of 3 types of prenatal aneuploidy screening tests available in Australia. NIPT requires a maternal blood test after 10 weeks gestation.
Insights and Experiences From the ‘Gatekeepers’: A Qualitative Study Exploring Clinician Perspectives on Providing Publicly Funded Prenatal Exome Sequencing - Dayman - Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology - Wiley Online Library
1 Introduction Genetic and genomic diagnostic technologies have revolutionised clinical practice in reproductive health, especially in the evaluation of foetal structural anomalies [1]. Foetal structural anomalies are detected by ultrasound in up to 5% of pregnancies [2], and first-tier genetic tests (karyotyping, Fluorescent In Situ Hybridisation and chromosomal microarray analysis) reveal a genetic cause in up to 40% of cases [3].

Clinical utility of maternal TORCH screening in fetal growth restriction: A retrospective two‐centre study
INTRODUCTION Toxoplasma gondii, rubella, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and herpes simplex virus (HSV), often grouped together as the TORCH infections, can cause transplacental infections and severe perinatal morbidity and mortality.1 Congenital infection may be associated with non-specific ultrasound findings, including fetal growth restriction (FGR). FGR does not represent a single disease entity, but rather the endpoint of many possible pathologies.
Pregnancy in women with mitochondrial disease-A literature review and suggested guidance for preconception and pregnancy care
INTRODUCTION Mitochondrial conditions encompass various genetic disorders characterised by cellular energy deficiency.1 These conditions result from abnormalities in the mitochondrial apparatus, which is influenced by both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA. Consequently, both autosomal and maternal inheritance patterns can occur.

Reductions in stillbirths and preterm birth in COVID-19-vaccinated women: a multicenter cohort study of vaccination uptake and perinatal outcomes
Background COVID-19 infection in pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of progression to severe disease, but vaccine uptake by pregnant women is hindered by persistent safety concerns. COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy has been shown to reduce stillbirth, but its relationship with preterm birth is uncertain. Objective This study aimed to measure the rate of COVID-19 vaccine uptake among women giving birth in Melbourne, Australia, and to compare perinatal outcomes by vaccination status.
