Highlights • Whole-gene KIT sequencing identified mutations in 18% of advanced acral and mucosal melanomas • Nilotinib induced objective responses at 12 weeks in 19% of patients with KIT-mutated melanoma • Droplet digital PCR assays are a feasible liquid biopsy for KIT mutations Summary Mucosal (MM) and acral melanomas (AM) are rare melanoma subtypes of unmet clinical need; 15%–20% harbor KIT mutations potentially targeted by small-molecule inhibitors, but none yet approved in melanoma.

Honorable mention award in the Feature Article category for my piece New York/Portland for the 2008 Writers Digest contest. New York/Portland was a comparison contrast piece about my two favorite cities where I have studied art, worked in art galleries or museums, and been a voyeur of the sort of artist Andy Warhol was. I hid behind my pen and note pad and sketch book as well as behind my Pentax camera. I have followed New York/Portland with a new, satire called New York/Portland II, which brings my life full circle as an adopted, Iraqi, female misfit writer and photojournalist in the world of Donald Trump era politics, while looking back at my life in the art world in Portland and New York.
