Lisa Patel, MD, MESc During a recent wildfire season, I walked into our neonatal intensive care unit and immediately smelled smoke. Polluted air was overwhelming our hospital filtration systems. We brought in additional air purifiers, adjusted care where possible, and reassured families. But the reality was inescapable: critically ill newborns with lungs the size of a pair of walnuts were breathing air made more toxic by climate-driven wildfires.
