Abstract In vertebrates, the glucocorticoid response through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis controls many essential functions, including behavior, metabolism, and ontogenetic transitions. However, there are tradeoffs associated with high levels of glucocorticoids, including reduced growth rate and lowered immunity. These tradeoffs drive variation in the timing of the development of the HPA axis across taxa.
