For a city of 10,000, Astoria’s cultural and civic life is outsized. Museums and theaters, hotels and working piers emerged from fire and flood, timber booms and salmon busts, maritime trade and generations of immigrants who have built lives where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. On a drive along U.S. Highway 30 into downtown, construction is hard to miss. Cranes dot the riverfront as a maritime museum and hospital prepare to expand. Several housing developments are going up.

Looking west from the Astoria Column at 100 - Discover Our Coast

Fred Pynes begins his day at 5 a.m. with a cup of coffee on Coxcomb Hill, where he lives with his wife, Pat, in a small cottage 600 feet above the Columbia River. The park host waits for daylight, then slips into a jacket and a pair of boots beside the front door. Outside, a balsa wood glider’s throw from the porch, is the Astoria Column. Pynes walks a few steps to the garage and climbs into a golf cart, which shuttles him around the grounds.

From high mountain ridges to the continental shelf, Oregon’s 363-mile coastline has been shaped over millions of years by collision and convergence. Since 1971, the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition has worked along this edge, after emerging from efforts to defend public access codified in the 1967 Oregon Beach Bill. The CoastWatch program, established in 1993 by former Oregon Shores board member Phillip Johnson, pairs volunteers with coastal miles to return to each season and document.
