Dance of the robot swans lights up winter tech festival

On a city lake at night, a dozen glowing robot swans glide across the water in a synchronised dance. The artwork CYGNUS by Berlin-based duo Loomaland is a bizarre and beautiful sight at Adelaide's Rymill Park Lake, as part of the Illuminate Adelaide festival. The city's winter celebration of art, light, music and technology was first staged in 2021 and attracted an audience of about 500,000 people. That's now grown to more than 1.5 million, thanks to a crowd-pleasing program of mostly free events.

How to unveil a public sculpture when it's 23 metres high and floating on Sydney Harbour? Just installed at Watermans Cove in Barangaroo South, Monuments for Fishes by artist Mikala Dwyer is one of the biggest floating kinetic sculptures in the world. It's made up of five towering spires, each designed to sway with the wind, rise and fall with the tides, and light up at night to create reflections on the water. Inspired by fishing floats, Dwyer came up with the concept for the artwork 14 years ago.

"I'm a writer, but I'm standing here before you today, really, as a victim of crime," author Anna Funder told reporters at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday.
