Center for Volunteer Caregiving in Cary offers services to help seniors, disabled adults

Volunteers who help those in need through The Center for Volunteer Caregiving quickly feel like family. Last year, volunteers in Wake County drove more than 41,000 miles taking seniors and adults with disabilities to the doctor, grocery store and on other essential errands. The bonds on those trips grow. One of those special relationships developed between Cary resident Jean Bucher and Nancy Nguyen, who volunteers through Friendly Visits, another of the Center’s free services.

Baboons, crocodiles, hyenas and robbers keep 8-year-old Mellissa awake at night. These are not Mellissa’s nightmares. These are her realities. Mellissa is the primary caregiver for her family of five and lives in a rural area near Zimbabwe, Africa. It’s been about a year since Cary resident Katrina Morrocco was part of a church mission trip to Zimbabwe when she met Mellissa.

Cary Christian School celebrates new chapter with 20th anniversary

There’s a lot riding on Calista Austin’s shoulders. On Aug. 4, she becomes the first legacy student at Cary Christian School. When the school’s founding members gathered 20 years ago, they hoped the day would come when children of graduates would start attending the school. I met Calista and her family at the school in July. Although Calista is just 5 years old, she knows her way around Cary Christian, especially the playground.
