Abstract Animals need to adjust their diel activity patterns to fulfil their energy and social requirements whilst avoiding predation risk and environmental constraints. The chacma baboon (Papio ursinus) is a highly adjustable primate occupying a variety of habitats in southern Africa, yet little is known about its diel activity patterns in different environments.
