World Animal Day: This is Why We Fight for Them
At Lady Freethinker, we care deeply about animals and are grateful to share this planet with them. We respect them for who they are, and believe every life matters. We want all animals to be seen, respected, and valued for the individuals they are because the way we see animals shapes how we treat them – and, ultimately, the kind of world they experience. So this World Animal Day, we want to celebrate animals and all that they bring to our lives.

This World Rabies Day, Lady Freethinker is celebrating major progress for dogs and cats in Sulawesi, Indonesia, through PROJECT Sulawesi – an initiative founded and led by Lady Freethinker to tackle rabies and the brutal dog and cat meat trade as interconnected issues. More than 50,000 rabies vaccine doses have already been distributed, while new regulations and enforcement measures are helping protect dogs and cats from the meat trade.
New Investigation Exposes Hidden Suffering Behind Bali’s Wildlife Attractions
This World Tourism Day, we’re exposing what all too often happens to wild animals behind the scenes at tourist attractions – and the role we can all play in changing it. Around the world, hundreds of thousands of wild animals are kept in wildlife facilities that offer visitors experiences promoted as exciting, educational, or even conservation-focused. But what visitors experience can hide a very different reality for the animals involved.

More than 46,000 people have joined Lady Freethinker, Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), Action for Primates, and other advocates in calling on Indonesia to stop exporting endangered long-tailed macaques for biomedical research and testing. To tackle this issue, organizations joined forces to create United For Primates, a coalition dedicated to protecting Indonesia’s long-tailed macaques from the research export trade.

For Benji: Why Your Support Matters
Bali Banners — A Personal Story and Thank You So often, the animals we ask you to help are thousands of miles away. You care deeply, but the cruelty can still feel distant. Another urgent appeal. Another heartbreaking case. Another animal you may never meet. Sometimes, though, it comes painfully close to home. And your support means everything.

From Rescue to Refuge: Inspiring Change in Hearts and Minds
With support from compassionate people like you, earlier this year Lady Freethinker provided a vital grant to help establish Bali Farm Sanctuary – a refuge for farmed animals rescued from the meat industry. At the heart of the sanctuary is something many of these animals have never known before: the freedom of choice. The choice to rest or explore. To forage, root, bathe, play, or simply lie in the sun.
Dogs Rescued From Puppy Mill Nightmare Now Safe and Loved in Their Forever Home
Thelma and Louise are finally safe, loved, and home together. When they were rescued from a puppy mill in Indonesia, both were severely underweight and suffering the physical toll of years of neglect, confinement, and repeated breeding. Thanks to your support, they received urgent veterinary care and have now been adopted together into a loving forever home, where they are enjoying good food, comfy beds, play, safety, and love.
LFT Helps Baby Macaques Rescued After Being Torn From Their Mothers and Trafficked
Thirteen wild-caught baby macaques, only a few weeks old, were rescued in Sumatra after being torn from their mothers and trafficked towards Jakarta. Tragically, one baby was too weak to survive, but the twelve survivors are now growing stronger under JAAN (Jakarta Animal Aid Network) Wildlife’s dedicated care, supported by emergency funding from Lady Freethinker’s compassionate supporters.
Cruelty Case Sparks Growing Calls to Protect Dogs and Cats in China
As the Yulin dog meat “festival” approaches, renewed calls to protect dogs and cats are exposing both the cruelty that remains and the progress already being made. A horrifying alleged cruelty case in Chongqing has sparked protests and renewed demands for stronger protection for dogs and cats across China. It has also exposed a devastating gap in the law: companion animals can suffer extreme cruelty, yet there is still no comprehensive national legislation protecting them.
LFT and JAAN Provide Free Spay & Neuter for Jakarta’s Most Vulnerable Cats to Mark World Veterinary Day
To mark World Veterinary Day, Lady Freethinker’s first-of-its-kind mobile veterinary clinic – launched in July 2025 in partnership with Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) – delivered a vital cat sterilization drive this weekend in some of Jakarta’s most underserved communities. Bringing care directly to areas where veterinary services are rarely accessible, the mobile clinic provides immediate support to vulnerable animals while preventing countless more from being born into hardship.

Major Progress in Our Fight to End the Dog and Cat Meat Trade in Sulawesi, Indonesia
We’re excited to share a major breakthrough in Central Sulawesi: Parigi Moutong Regency has issued official circulars (Surat Edaran) that explicitly prohibit the trade, slaughter, and distribution of dogs and cats for consumption, and mandate enforcement and monitoring by local authorities. This is a critical step forward in our fight to end the dog and cat meat trade across Sulawesi – one of Indonesia’s largest hubs for the supply, slaughter, and consumption of dogs and cats.
A Valentine’s Day Gift of Freedom: 24 Rescued Macaques Return Home
This Valentine’s Day, years of love and dedication culminated in the return to the wild of 24 long-tailed macaques. Thanks to your support, Lady Freethinker was able to provide the funding our friends at Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) needed to safely relocate and release these macaques after months – and in some cases years – of expert rehabilitation at their Sumatra Wildlife Center.
One in a Billion: A Piglet’s Life Story Rewritten
Peter is a Bali Heritage Pig whose future once seemed tragically foretold. Like the more than one billion pigs slaughtered for food every year, his life was likely to be short and defined by exploitation. But Peter is one piglet in over a billion. He survived, and escaped the meat industry. Peter (Photo Credit: Bali Farm Sanctuary) After being surrendered by a pig farm at just five weeks old, his life took a completely new trajectory, leading him to the Bali Farm Sanctuary.
A Step Forward for Elephants: Bali Zoo Announces End to Elephant Rides
The famous Bali Zoo has announced that it will end elephant rides, marking an important step forward for animal welfare in Indonesia. The decision, effective as of Jan. 1, follows a December 2025 directive from Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry requiring licensed conservation institutions to terminate elephant riding programs, in line with strengthened animal welfare standards. These developments signal a shift away from practices that have long prioritized entertainment over animal well-being.

Lady Freethinker Helps Rescue Severely Neglected Macaques From Government Facility in Indonesia
Last week, Lady Freethinker received an urgent alert from our friends at Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) in Indonesia: six macaques housed at a government quarantine facility were in severe condition – malnourished, possibly ill, and in desperate need of care.
Jakarta to Ban Dog and Cat Meat Trade as Momentum Builds for National Ban
In a landmark win for animal rights, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has announced that a Governor’s Regulation (PERGUB) will be issued within one month to ban the dog and cat meat trade across Indonesia’s capital. He has further pledged to introduce Regional Regulations (PERDA) to establish a permanent legal framework to end this horrific practice. Every year, tens of thousands of dogs and cats in Indonesia are stolen from families, crammed into cages, and brutally slaughtered.

Bringing Hope on Wheels: Lady Freethinker Sponsors Mobile Veterinary Care for Jakarta’s Most Vulnerable Animals
Lady Freethinker and Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) have reached a significant milestone for animal welfare in Indonesia with the July 3rd launch of a groundbreaking mobile veterinary clinic. Supporting Jakarta’s Forgotten Workhorses – and so much more Jakarta’s delman horses – the gentle animals behind the city’s traditional carriages – are not a breed, but a role. Once numbering nearly 1,000, fewer than 200 remain today.
Lady Freethinker and Bali Animal Welfare Association Strengthen Efforts to End Bali’s Dog Meat Trade
With powerful new public banners across key areas in Bali, Lady Freethinker and Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) are taking a stand against the illegal dog meat trade. Supported by local law enforcement, these banners send a clear and urgent message: animal cruelty and dog meat trading are crimes under Indonesian law – and those responsible will be held accountable. Every year across Indonesia, millions of dogs endure unimaginable cruelty to supply the illegal dog meat trade.
