The patient Jeanne-Antoinette Lenormant d'Etiolles (1721–64), née Poisson, Duchess of Menars, and commonly known as Madame de Pompadour, met Louis XV of France (1710–74) at her Versailles presentation in September, 1745. Louis XV offered his new favourite the Pompadour estate and made her a marquise. However, her background, as the daughter of a bourgeois who worked in the army supply corps, rapidly attracted criticism from the court's aristocrats.
