ABSTRACT It has been found that in mixtures of nematic E7 and smectogenic cholesteryl oleyl carbonate (COC) the SmA – N* transition temperature is substantially (by ~20 K) increased, as compared with pure COC, at E7 concentrations around ~40 wt. %. Within the same concentration range, the isotropic transition is preceded by formation of blue phase (BP), with its maximum width of ~3.5 K clearly correlated to the increased thermal stability of the SmA phase.
It is known that the oblique helicoidal cholesteric structure (${{\rm Ch}_{\rm{OH}}}$), which is formed in an alternating electrical field applied to the chiral nematic phase (${{\rm N}^*}$) at temperatures above the chiral twist–bend nematic phase (${\rm N}_{\rm{tb}}^*$), can show selective Bragg reflection in the visible range of the spectrum.
4.1.4. Ferro- and Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystals Ferroelectric LCs have been receiving scientific attention for about fifty years, starting from the discovery of the ferroelectric chiral smectic phases [179]. Ferroelectricity reflects a spontaneous electric polarization of LC material which can be reversed by the application of an electric field [180,181]. In these materials, the dipoles all point in the same direction.
