Opinion: Vote yes on Prop. 40 ‘billionaire tax’ to save state healthcare
Do you remember HR 1, President Trump’s “Big, Ugly Bill” that granted massive tax breaks to billionaires? Well, those tax breaks came at a cost. They were paid for by slashing $100 billion in California’s healthcare funding over the next few years. As usual, working people are being told to foot the bill while the super-rich take more from us. The majority of HR 1 cuts are conveniently set to begin after the midterm elections.

Opinion: Yes on Proposition 32. Everyone who works full-time should be able to afford life’s basic needs.
Everyone who works full time should be able to afford life’s basic needs. That’s not a Democratic or Republican value. That’s a core principle every Californian of all political beliefs can embrace. However, right now, millions of Californians are working more than full time yet still can’t afford life’s basic needs because the cost of living has become so expensive. Let’s put that simply: The goods and services people need to buy cost more than the amount of wages people are earning.
No cobran horas extras. No están protegidos por las leyes laborales federales.
Opinion: Cesar Chavez paved the way for stronger worker protections, but the fight continues
(California Labor Federation ) What workers want is not gigs, they want full-time hours guaranteed, reliable schedules, employer-provided health care and Social Security benefits. Gonzalez Fletcher is chief officer of the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, and lives in San Diego. Imagine a group of workers doing essential and dangerous work. They don’t get overtime pay. They aren’t covered by federal labor laws.

California should expand loans that help lower-income borrowers. This bill would do that
Hard-working Californians have long been the target of predatory lenders, which the California Supreme Court recently ruled can no longer offer loans with “unduly oppressive terms” and interest rates so high they are“unconscionable.” While the decision is laudable, the court did nothing to clarify what defines “unconscionable” and what, if anything, the ruling will mean for working families who are borrowing at triple-digit interest rates and are trapped in an endless cycle of debt.
California legislators expect companies to let workers join a union. So why not their own staff?
When I first came to the Legislature in 2013, one of the first things I was told was that my staff didn’t work for me, they worked for the Rules Committee. If I wanted to hire, promote or fire any employee, or give them a raise, I needed to go through Rules. There were policies and guidelines to follow, except when they didn’t matter. Many California labor laws don’t apply to legislative employees. But as a former labor leader and union organizer, I was worried.
Why airport control belongs with Port of San Diego
San Diego, whether we like it or not, is no longer a sleepy little beach town. It is a major metropolitan city with substantial air traffic that is looking to increase by some 10 million trips annually over the next 10 years. It is a region that suffers from increased traffic around the airport, no direct public transit to and from the airport, and a very real threat of sea-level rise that could leave our airport literally under water.
What SDPD needs to stop doing to teenagers without telling parents
Let’s say you’re the parent of a teen-age boy. One day police stop your son on the street and take a DNA swab from his mouth. They don’t have a warrant. They don’t arrest your child for anything. They’ve simply decided they need the boy’s DNA for “investigative purposes.” Oh, and they don’t bother to notify you about any of this ahead of time. Now your son’s DNA profile is stored in a police database, presumably forever, even though he hasn’t been charged with a single crime.
Working Californians deserve a day at the beach, too
While many Californians cooled off at the beach this summer, that classic experience is out of reach for a lot of hardworking families. Soaring real estate prices on the coast have driven many families further and further inland. The cost of a trip to the beach – gas, parking and food – quickly adds up. In a recent UCLA statewide poll, 90 percent said the condition of the coast is important to them personally and 62 percent said that limited public access to the coast is a problem.
California needs to acquire better voting equipment
We were surprised by the editorial board’s opposition to our efforts to adequately fund California elections. The arguments presented were particularly concerning in that they focused more on the method of the funding than the urgency. California voting equipment is perilously near its life expectancy. Aging equipment presents a clear and present danger to our elections.
Agency reform plan: Better accountability, transparency
Can you imagine a government where the representatives of 15 percent of the population get to veto anything that happens in an entire region? That’s the reality facing San Diego when it comes to our transportation needs — all of which are controlled by the San Diego Association of Governments, more commonly known as SANDAG. If that acronym sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve seen recent headlines.
