Opinion: Vote No on EE. It won’t fix Berkeley’s streets
Measure EE falls short in meeting its promises to Berkeley voters about street repair and street safety. It lacks effective oversight, lets our streets degrade further, and will burden taxpayers with more unfunded liabilities. We join the Berkeley Democratic Club in recommending that every Berkeley voter vote no on EE. Instead, voters should vote yes on FF, the widely supported measure that can actually meet our city’s needs.
Opinion: Rashi Kesarwani for Berkeley City Council District 1
Over the last four years, we have served alongside Councilmember Rashi Kesarwani, and we have seen how she listens to stakeholders with diverse viewpoints, pays attention to details, and builds consensus for cost-effective policies. We partnered with Rashi to fix our city’s street paving budget and reinstate police positions to ensure community safety.
Terry Taplin running for Berkeley City Council, is a climate justice leader
When it comes to solving our climate and housing crises, we believe that Terry Taplin (D2) is the most inspiring, grounded, and action-oriented candidate running for Berkeley City Council. A working-class, Black, gay man who grew up in West Berkeley and attended Berkeley public schools, Terry is an energetic and practical community organizer, an innovative thinker, and a deeply engaged and empathetic collaborator focused on solving our climate and housing crisis.
Opinion: Why we support Berkeley Measure II for police accountability
We are pleased to support Measure II, on the November ballot, to provide greater accountability to the Berkeley police. Public safety is at the core of a thriving community, and it is vital to the administration of the city of Berkeley. The national upsurge in the movement for Black Lives and against police brutality reminds us that safety cannot be separated from the demand for justice in law enforcement. There truly cannot be peace without justice.
Which Berkeley City Council members are endorsing Jesse Arreguín for mayor?
As Berkeley City Councilmembers representing diverse neighborhoods, we don’t always agree on everything. But there is one thing we all agree on: Mayor Jesse Arreguín is a skilled and dedicated leader, an excellent colleague, and an outstanding mayor for Berkeley. Not only is he the best candidate for Berkeley mayor in 2020, he is the only candidate qualified to lead our city – and our City Council – during these next four years. We urge you to join us in supporting Mayor Arreguín’s re-election.
Opinion: Sounding the alarm on Berkeley's housing proposals — Berkeleyside
The Bay Area is suffering from an enormous affordability crisis. Rents have risen rapidly and displacement throughout the region is on the rise. As a result, communities of color, young people, teachers, and many, many others are driven away and excluded from living in Berkeley. Land use policies, the underproduction of housing, rising income inequality, and the legacy of Proposition 13 are some of the main culprits of the housing crisis.
SoMa activist who ‘understands impact of gentrification’ tapped for SF planning board
South of Market community activist Theresa Imperial has been nominated to the San Francisco Planning Commission to replace Myrna Melgar, who is stepping down to run for the Board of Supervisors’ District 7 seat. Imperial, who was nominated by Board of Supervisors President Norman Yee, is the executive director of the Bill Sorro Housing Program, which helps low-income residents find subsidized housing. The Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on her appointment Tuesday.
Berkeley Councilmembers Endorse UC Plan for People's Park
Don't miss this. Arreguin, Droste, Robinson are endorsing UC's redevelopment plan for the site of People's Park in today's online Chronicle.
It’s time for a new People’s Park
In People’s Park’s 2.8 acres, there are countless stories. Stories that have shaped the history of Berkeley, and the progressive movement as we know it. And in People’s Park, there is also pain. The park was born in the face of callous government repression and abuse by Gov. Ronald Reagan’s National Guard, and today perhaps no other plot of land in Berkeley so visibly and viscerally exemplifies the housing crisis that we face as a city and a region.
Opinion: Rigel Robinson is the progressive, consensus choice for City Council
We on Berkeley City Council disagree on a number of things. But, this year, the District 7 City Council race isn’t one of them. We all believe that Rigel Robinson would make an excellent District 7 Councilmember. In an unprecedented display of confidence, Rigel has been endorsed by every single member of the Council, including the Mayor.
Opinion: Celebrate $15 minimum wage for Berkeley workers
Today Berkeley ushers in a $15/hour minimum wage. How we got here is a good reminder of how we can work together on important issues instead of attacking each other on ideologies. On Oct. 1, 2018 Berkeley workers started earning $15 an hour. Berkeley is only one of about 21 cities across the nation that have adopted $15 minimum wages. In August of 2016, Berkeley unanimously passed the second fastest minimum wage in the nation.
Students must help burst Berkeley housing crisis bubble
Berkeley and the Bay Area as a region suffer from a critical lack of housing. Between 1970 and 1990, Berkeley actually lost housing units as a city. While we have been building more housing, it’s not nearly enough to offset years of underbuilding or to make a real dent in current prices. While Berkeley hasn’t reached the outlandish prices of our uber (pardon the pun) fancy neighbor San Francisco, our city is certainly approaching those untenable housing prices.
