A missed opportunity for enhancing conservation and parks
The Texas Legislature missed out on a big opportunity this week to open up and create more parks and natural spaces for all Texans. This month, our Texas House and Senate put together, and the governor has signed SB 8, a bill to appropriate over $16 billion from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) in coronavirus pandemic relief funding for the state of Texas.

Private land conservation’s role in mitigating flood risk
There is little debate among scientists that our climate is changing, and in Texas that has meant ever-larger storm events resulting in catastrophic flooding. This Earth Day, we should take a moment to reflect on some potential solutions that can help our communities to cost-effectively and permanently mitigate flood risk, minimizing the damage to lives and property that so many of us have experienced across the Lone Star State.
Dimethyl Itaconate Is Not Metabolized into Itaconate Intracellularly
Itaconic acid is an important metabolite produced by macrophages after stimulation with LPS. The role of itaconate in the inflammatory cascade is unclear. Here we used [13C]itaconate and dimethyl [13C]itaconate (DMI) to probe itaconate metabolism, and find that [13C]DMI is not metabolized to itaconate. [13C]Itaconate in the cell culture medium leads to elevated intracellular levels of unlabeled succinate, with no evidence of intracellular uptake.

Author contributions: M.E., C.R.E., K.A.G., B.R.M and C.F.B conceived and designed the experiments. L.L.O and M.J.T synthesized and provided the 13C itaconate. C.T.M.B.T and B.R.M synthesized and provided the 13C DMI. M.E and C.E performed the experiments. All authors contributed to the manuscript writing Itaconic acid is an important metabolite produced by macrophages after stimulation with LPS. Land trusts preserve Texas for future generations
Texas’ diverse landscapes shape our cultural identity and traditions and enhance our lives. Our beautiful rivers and lakes, tall grass prairies, rugged mountains, eastern forests, Gulf Coast beaches and rolling Texas hills reflect our regional personalities, our community values and our family traditions. But personality and that special Texas character aren’t all that our natural lands have given us. Land and water conservation are essential to a healthy Texas.
Olson: Celebrate Earth Day by supporting Texas conservation
Since 1970, Americans have celebrated Earth Day in April as a chance to recognize our collective accomplishments toward protecting our natural resources for future generations. Yet, for many people, Earth Day is an obscure, impersonal date. It conjures images of Amazon rain forests, kids “adopting” manatees in Florida or protesters chaining themselves to trees. In reality, here in Texas, Earth Day has a much more intimate, local connection.
