Introduction Mutations in the Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) gene lead to the most common genetic form of intellectual disability and autism, called Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) (1, 2). In addition to intellectual impairment, FMR1 gene mutations are also associated with reproductive disorders, such as early menopause in females, and macroorchidism in males (3–6). The FMR1 gene encodes FMR protein (FMRP), an mRNA binding protein that regulates protein levels of its target genes (7, 8).
