At the time that I made The Devils, I was a devout Catholic, and secure in my faith. I knew I wasn’t making a pornographic film. Far from it. In fact, the movie had the blessing of the Jesuits. Even to this day it is still taught at Loyola University in Chicago as a good Catholic movie. For myself, although I am not a political creature, I always viewed The Devils as my one political film. To me, it was about brainwashing, about the state taking over.

The diverse works cut across comedy, drama, fiction and non-fiction, with running times between 12 and 40 minutes and have been made by directors working with a budget of €100,000 each.

Released in June 1977, Exorcist II: The Heretic was one of the most anticipated films of its year. The follow-up to William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, his 1973 mega-hit about the demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl, based on the novel by William Peter Blatty, it was expected to be the biggest movie of the summer. Until audiences saw it, that is.
