What to know, what to carry and what to do if the worst happens Learn how common snares and traps work Seconds matter when dogs get caught in snares or traps designed to kill fur-bearing mammals. While encounters with such quick-kill traps are rare, it still pays to avoid areas with active traplines. It’s also wise to have an emergency plan in place in the unlikely event your dog does get caught. KNOWLEDGE Before heading afield, learn how common killing traps and snares work.

TOXIC TREATS Dogs are naturally curious and will often eat things in the field that smell good to them, including mushrooms. While some fungi are non-poisonous, others can lead to illness and even death. Since you can’t be sure which of these unauthorized treats your dog finds, consider all wild mushrooms to be poisonous. With proper training, supervision and the use of treats or a muzzle, you can significantly reduce the risks even more.

This Garmin Xero L60i rangefinder review has been field tested over three months. Quick verdict The Garmin Xero L60i is much more than a premium laser rangefinder. It combines accurate ranging, GPS navigation, onboard mapping, a color heads-up display and Applied Ballistics Elite in one handheld unit. After three months of testing, its biggest strength is integration. Its biggest drawback is equally clear: at a $2,500 USD MSRP, it offers far more technology than many hunters need.
