Man released on bail over alleged headbutt on Keane
A man arrested on suspicion of headbutting Roy Keane has been released on bail until late September. The 42-year-old is accused of assault causing actual bodily harm over a confrontation with Keane at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Footage was posted on social media of fellow Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards stepping in to move the suspect away from Keane. The confrontation followed Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Manchester United.
Serbian Simanic loses kidney after injury at World Cup
Serbian Borisa Simanic underwent surgery to remove a kidney after taking a blow to his midsection against South Sudan at the Basketball World Cup last week, Serbia's basketball federation said on Monday. Twomey ends Cork tenure in wake of All-Ireland win
Matthew Twomey has brought the curtain down on his tenure as Cork senior camogie manager, just a month after guiding the county to All-Ireland glory. The Douglas club man reportedly informed the county board of his decision not to seek a further year in charge on Monday night. Twomey was appointed Cork manager in November 2021 on a two-year term, succeeding four-time All-Ireland winning boss Paudie Murray.
Farrell could opt to play Sexton in every pool game
Finally, the World Cup will get underway in France this weekend. This World Cup cycle has been hugely positive for Ireland, a clear evolution since the 2019 quarter-final loss to New Zealand. Not to suggest, however, that is has all been plain sailing either. Andy Farrell and his coaches took some time to change the shape of Ireland's game, instilling different habits and thought processes around their decision-making on the field.
McCarthy ready to wrestle his way into Ireland team
Ireland lock Joe McCarthy says wrestling matches and reassuring chats with his younger brother helped pave the way to his maiden Rugby World Cup. The 22-year-old only made his international debut against Australia last autumn and was included in Andy Farrell's 33-man squad for France despite just 129 minutes of Test experience across three caps.
US Open spectator removed for shouting 'Hitler phrase'
A fan was ejected from the US Open on Monday after Germany's Alexander Zverev protested about a "Hitler phrase" being shouted from the stands. Zverev was serving in the fourth set of his last-16 battle with Italy's Jannik Sinner on the Arthur Ashe Stadium when the drama unfolded. The 12th-seeded Zverev approached chair umpire James Keothavong to complain about the alleged catcall. "He just said the most famous Hitler phrase there is in this world," Zverev told the umpire.
Irish fans feel the time is now
Nine times Ireland have travelled to World Cups in hope and expectation but have come up short on each occasion. They remain the only top-tier nation not to have reached the last four. Golden generations, good draws, bad draws, injury-jinxes, shock losses and routine exits: Ireland have a complete bingo book of Webb Ellis failures. Superfan Majella Ryan has seen first-hand the pain of Paris in 2007, the washout in Wellington in 2011 and the Shizuoka sayonara four years ago.
Shelbourne ready for second crack at Champions League
After last year's maiden voyage in Champions League waters, Shelbourne are eagerly looking forward to testing themselves again in Europe when they take on Glasgow City in Lithuania on Wednesday morning (kick-off 10am). The carrot for Noel King’s side is that should they defeat the current Scottish league champions, they would face the winners of FC Gintra of Lithuania or Cardiff City (Wales) in the same venue.

Borthwick insists England will not alter tactics
Steve Borthwick insists England will persist with their current tactics despite entering the World Cup with a losing run that has seen them installed as underdogs for their opener against Argentina. Five defeats in six Tests have reduced expectations from outside the camp that they will make an impact in the tournament.
Cullen not dwelling on French error ahead of Paris trip
Josh Cullen's resilience was tested somewhat in the aftermath of Republic of Ireland's 1-0 home loss to France last March. A rousing all-round performance, a disciplined defensive display, a lung-bursting showing from Chiedozie Ogbene, all came to naught after Cullen's fatal decision to play a lateral pass to Jason Knight.
Vondrousova sweeps into last eight at Flushing Meadows
Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova moved a step closer to back-to-back grand slam titles by beating Peyton Stearns to reach the US Open quarter-finals. The 24-year-old Czech, seeded ninth here two months after becoming the first unseeded woman to win at SW19, fell a set behind to Stearns. But the American youngster, whose powerful forehand accounted for Britain's Katie Boulter in round three, won just five more games as Vondrousova triumphed 6-7 (3) 6-3 6-2.
Antony denies assault claims as Brazil drop United star

In an interview with Brazilian website UOL - which also published photographs and screenshots of messages between the pair - Gabriela Cavallin claims she was attacked by Antony "with a headbutt" in a Manchester hotel room on 15 January, leaving her with a cut head which needed treatment from a doctor.
Spurs pair Sanchez and Ndombele depart for Galatasaray
Tottenham have confirmed the transfers of Davinson Sanchez and Tanguy Ndombele to Galatasaray. While the English transfer window shut on Friday night, other transfer windows around Europe remain open and Turkish outfit Galatasaray have moved for two players which Spurs view as dispensable.
Defending champ Alcaraz marches into US Open quarters
Carlos Alcaraz wasted little time in seeing off Matteo Arnaldi to march into the quarter-finals at the US Open. The defending champion and world number one was a comprehensive 6-3 6-3 6-4 winner inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. British number one Cameron Norrie could be forgiven for thinking he had dodged a bullet after losing to Arnaldi in the previous round. The Italian did manage a break at the start of the third but it was quickly snuffed out as Alcaraz raced to victory in under two hours.
Sainz thanks police after reported attempted theft
Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz has thanked police following reports he was the target of an attempted theft after Sunday's Italian Grand Prix. According to Corriere dello Sport, the 29-year-old was approached by two men, under the pretense of wanting a selfie, who removed a watch worth hundreds of thousands of pounds from his wrist. Sainz and his bodyguard reportedly chased the thieves and managed to retrieve the timepiece and were then helped by members of the public before police arrived.
Harrington bullish for Team Europe's chances in Rome
Padraig Harrington is confident that Europe can maintain their unbeaten Ryder Cup home record that stretches back to 1993. Europe will attempt to regain the trophy at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club from 29 September to 1 October, with a Harrington-captained Europe going down 19-9 at Whistling Straits last time out. This year's captain Luke Donald finalised his team today, with any outside hopes of Harrington or Seamus Power picking up a wildcard, extinguished.
In-form Sarah Lavin smashes 100m Irish record
In-form Sarah Lavin has added the 100m national record to her recently acquired 100m hurdle Irish record. The Limerick sprinter posted a time of 11:27 to break Phil Healy's record in Switzerland this evening. Lavin finished second to Italy’s Zaynab Dosso who crossed in 11:15.
Nathan Collins on Henry '09 - 'I was at Cheerios gig!'
The still photo of Thierry Henry controlling the ball 'basketball style' is burnt onto the retinas of most Irish football fans, though Nathan Collins was otherwise disposed for most of the evening. The 22-year old defender only caught sight of Henry's famous act of larceny thanks to the big screen at the train station on the way back from a ChildLine gig.
Seamus Power withdraws from Irish Open through injury
Seamus Power has been forced to withdraw from this week's Horizon Irish Open at the K Club through injury. The two-time PGA Tour winner has been troubled by hip problems for much of the 2023 season, previously withdrawing from the Scottish Open in July. This week, Power was overlooked for a captain's pick by Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, following his recent downturn in form.
'I made a mistake'
Owen Farrell admits the tackle that resulted in his suspension for Saturday's World Cup opener against Argentina was a mistake. England’s captain is "gutted" to be unavailable for the pivotal Marseille showdown after his dangerous hit on Wales’ Taine Basham last month resulted in a four-match suspension that ends after the Pool D clash with Japan. Farrell initially had his red card downgraded to a yellow by a disciplinary hearing, only for World Rugby to successfully appeal against the decision.
FAI silence has created an unhelpful vacuum
The FAI needs to explain the decision not to offer Vera Pauw a new contract, or matters off the pitch will continue to overshadow events on it, according to former Ireland manager Sue Ronan. Pauw was informed, following a board meeting, that her contract with the FAI would not be renewed.

The whole project was costed at around €12m, up from an estimated €7m when planning permission was first granted in 2019.

With two crews to advance directly, it was Ireland and Romania that broke away from the rest of the field shortly after the halfway mark. Romania's Ionela Cozmiuc and Mariana-Laura Dumitru, who won silver in this event back in July, finished .38 of a second ahead of the Irish crew.
