EESC Info February 2026
The European Economic and Social Committee’s enlargement candidate members (ECMs) initiative, launched in 2023, is the first EU‑level initiative to directly involve civil society representatives from EU candidate countries in the EU decision‑making process.
E dunque rassegnamoci a perderli.
No ‘chaos’ at the European Economic and Social Committee
8/28/20, 12:23 PM CEST The three faces of Donald Trump Tyrant? Buffoon? Voice of the forgotten? We still don’t have Donald Trump figured out. That’s a problem for the party trying to take him down.
Europe must be the frontrunner to avoid Africa’s Corona boomerang
By Luca Jahier, President of the European Economic and Social Committee For a continent with nearly 1.3 billion inhabitants, Africa has so far been relatively spared by the COVID-19 pandemic, with roughly 6000 cases – mostly in South Africa and Algeria – and 200 deaths at the time of writing. The worst is, alas, still to come. Last week, the COVID-19 virus reached two countries at war: Libya and Mali. Some countries have started containment, such as Algeria, South Africa and Rwanda.
Oggi noi tutti siamo Segre
Bring back the spirit of ’89 to forge a new rEUnaissance
30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall it is time to bring back the spirit of ’89 to forge a new rEUnaissance, argues Luca Jahier. Luca Jahier is the President of the European Economic and Social Committee Thirty years ago, the world woke up to the crumbling of the Berlin Wall. Few had seen it coming, few had anticipated the implosion of the Communist bloc. The images of these days will never be forgotten.
Africa.
FDR must be turning in his grave at Trump's intransigent foreign and trade policy
On 26 April, in a fiery speech at the annual meeting of the National Rifle association, President Donald Trump announced the United States' intention to withdraw as a signatory of the Arms Trade Treaty regulating conventional weapons, a key multilateral instrument to strengthen responsibility and transparency in the international arms trade (and illicit trade).

[Opinion] Greta is right: We need courage to change
In a world undergoing profound technological, economic, geopolitical and demographic transformations, we are confronted with five major crises. We are facing a climate crisis, whose effects are already being felt on our continent; a social crisis with rising inequalities and the radical transformation of work; an economic and competitiveness crisis; and a democratic crisis with the rise of nationalism and the questioning of fundamental values.

Time to break the mourning silence on International Holocaust Remembrance Day
Home Opinions Politics Future EU Time to break the mourning silence on International Holocaust Remembrance Day DISCLAIMER: All opinions in this column reflect the views of the author(s), not of EURACTIV.COM Ltd. Holocaust memorial in Berlin [Wikimedia] Europeans are losing a sense of history and not learning from the mistakes of the past. It is time to stop mourning, and start banishing hate speech which can only lead us back to the horrors of the past, writes Luca Jahier.
Europe needs a new governance mechanism for sustainability
The European Union unveiled a strategy last week to become the world’s first climate neutral economy by 2050, generating a positive momentum ahead of the COP24 in Katowice, writes Luca Jahier. Luca Jahier is the president of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), a consultative body of the European Union established under the EU treaties. Climate change is all but an environmental issue: it is a unique business opportunity as rightly pointed out by the document.
[Opinion] On Armistice Day, EU is still best gift we can give our children
Who would dispute that memory and commemoration are not part of the journey towards crafting stronger national identities? No historian, no anthropologist, no ethnographer would argue against that. However, as we prepare to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War on Armistice Day (Sunday, 11 November), there is a risk of limiting our commemoration to representing the past through lengthy speeches, exhibits in historical museums, and brief visits to historic sites.
Secure a social Triple A by making the Social Pillar a reality
Nearly one billion people have escaped poverty worldwide since the 1st #EndPoverty Day, but too many others have been left behind, even in Europe, writes Luca Jahier. Luca Jahier is the president of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).
World Refugee Day, a reminder for EU leaders that reforming the migration system is urgent
Millions are fleeing war or persecution worldwide. As we commemorate their strength and courage on World Refugee Day, we try to be calm quoting the record high number of 68.5 million displaced people – 3 million higher than the total population of the UK – 25.4 million refugees, 40 million internally displaced and 3.1 million asylum seekers, writes Luca Jahier. Luca Jahier is president of the European Economic and Social Committee.
