It's a bit of a paradox: Polling indicates that most Latinos in the United States place a high value on environmental conservation (Earthjustice 2015). But Latinos — especially in the younger age brackets — tend to participate in outdoor recreation at lower rates than members of other demographic groups (Outdoor Foundation 2017). It's an imbalance that Claudia Diaz Carrasco decided to do something about.

UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), as an organization that has connected the people of California to UC research for over a century, is very well positioned to take advantage of emerging trends in scientist-community collaborations. The paragraphs below describe innovative projects that UC ANR personnel have developed, just in the last few years, to serve the public good by involving community members in the work that UC ANR does every day. Nuclear weapons have threatened humanity for more than 70 years. Anthropogenic climate change, though largely unrecognized until recent decades, had its beginnings in the 19th century. Wouldn’t it be nice if advances in technology stopped throwing new problems at the world? No such luck. Several emerging technological threats could—soon enough—come to rival nuclear weapons and climate change in their potential to upend (or eliminate) civilization.
