Climbers rescued in blizzard after scaling Ben Nevis in trainers

Four people had to be rescued near the summit of Britain’s highest peak after getting caught in blizzard conditions without proper kit – with some of them wearing trainers. Rescuers said the group was extremely lucky after attempting to scale Ben Nevis in the Highlands in “horrendous” weather without ice axes and crampons, and apparently no maps. Three of them were wearing trainers when they were airlifted from the mountain in wind chill temperatures of minus 20C on Monday.

Global sleep-out shines spotlight on homelessness

An estimated 60,000 people – including Hollywood A-listers – are taking part in a charity sleep-out as a fundraiser to end homelessness went global. Organisers of the World’s Big Sleep Out, which began on a small scale in Edinburgh in 2016, said 52 cities are participating in this year’s event, from Brisbane to Los Angeles. Fundraisers in London’s Trafalgar Square are being treated to a bedtime story by Dame Helen Mirren, while Will Smith will do the honours in New York’s Times Square.

R2-D2 actor tells of joy at filling Kenny Baker’s shoes inside ‘the can’

Star Wars actor Jimmy Vee has spoken of his delight at getting to play the charismatic droid R2-D2, ahead of the upcoming release of The Rise Of Skywalker. Vee has filled the shoes of the late Kenny Baker in the three sequels, which will conclude when the JJ Abrams-directed blockbuster hits cinemas on December 19. The Scottish actor said he does not know what is next for the franchise, but he may be ready to step back from his movie career and leave R2-D2 – or “the can” – behind.
