Introduction Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is the surgical resolution of stenosis in the common carotid and internal carotid arteries (ICA) due to the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaque. This procedure aims to reduce the future risk of atherosclerotic plaque-rupture leading to complications such as stroke or complete occlusion. The diseased carotid artery is controlled, opened and the plaque removed helping restore laminar blood-flow to the Circle of Willis (Rasheed et al, 2019).
