What was your first job as a journalist?
I worked at my campus newspaper, the Charlatan, as the sports editor.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I haven't used a typewriter, although I do want to try one.
How is social media changing news?
It's creating an echo chamber of ideas and forcing outlets to be faster to get stories up as anyone can now be a journalist in a sense.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
A journalist is a storyteller who's task is to keep the public informed on the issues that matter.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
I don't remember.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I prefer for the story pitch to be well researched and presented as a focus statement.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Microsoft Word, Lightroom, Adobe Audition and InDesign
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook.
Who do you wish followed you?
My twitter isn't clever enough for me to impress anyone.
Why did you become a journalist?
I became a journalist because I was attracted to the idea of searching for the truth.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was the sports editor for Volume 45 of the Charlatan and the photo editor for an issue of Volume 46.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A story about a tenant organized rental strike.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
I can't really offer any as I am one.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Usually in the morning.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
To go to a living history museum and live out confederation as if I was a journalist from 1867.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
To look into a dying species of bees that weren't actually dying.
What's your favorite drink?
Caesar.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
At a basketball court shooting hoops, or the bar.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Globe and Mail.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I don't really have a beat, however, as a previous sports editor and reporter the misconception is sports stories write themselves.
