Spurred by spectacular successes, cell-based therapies continue to be a very active field of research. (1) As therapeutic agents, cells enable unique applications and, in some cases, greatly surpass traditional drugs in efficacy. For example, mesenchymal stem cells, which can differentiate into multiple cell types and have immunomodulatory effects, (2) have been explored as therapeutic agents in arthritis (3) and other diseases.
