1 Introduction Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global metabolic disease, with an estimated 589 million people currently affected worldwide (1). While the harmful effects of chronic hyperglycemia are well-established, recent studies indicate that the natural course of diabetes is dynamically evolving. This trend is most evident in type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, in type 1 diabetes, advances in technology assisted care and disease-modifying strategies similarly redirect its disease trajectory.
