On Welcoming: A warmer welcome
We discussed the need for affordable housing for people of modest means a year and a half ago. Since then, the lack of options has only gotten worse. The cost of lumber and other raw materials for construction has gone up, leading to even higher prices for new homes. The increased competition for smaller, older homes has also resulted in higher prices.
On Welcoming: Recreating civility in our divided nation
Braver Angels is a national organization focused on bridging the political divide. Following is an excerpt from a recent email that I thought would be helpful to share as we move forward as a community and as a nation. “Braver Angels’ co-founder Bill Doherty has been leading a conversation this past week titled: ‘Preparing to be tested as a Braver Angel: Managing the aftermath of the election.’ It’s a good read and a perfect time to practice being a Braver Angel.
On Welcoming: This must be said
Since we started the “On Welcoming” column, we have been intentionally non-partisan. We haven’t promoted candidates campaigning for any office. We’ve acknowledged that our columns are often political, in the Greek sense that the word “politics” has to do with affairs of the city. That said, in this column in the final days before this year’s election, we feel compelled to offer the following thoughts.
Braver Angels: finding common ground
As we near another national election, that does not always elicit our best selves. We have choices to make regarding how we communicate our passions. Braver Angels is leading the nation’s largest cross-partisan, volunteer-led movement to bridge the partisan divide for the good of our democratic republic.
On Welcoming: Participating in our community’s vision
We have a limited opportunity to help the Delano City Council and staff envision what sort of community we want to have in 2040. The drafted Delano 2040 comprehensive plan can be viewed on the city website at https://www.delanomn.gov/564/Proposed-Delano-2040-Comprehensive-Plan, or a paper copy can be viewed at city hall during normal business hours. According to the city website, “During this […]
Changing Spaces
Counting down the days until commencement also means counting down the days left in the mountain town I have come to love. Since the start of my senior year, I keep counting my lasts in Flagstaff — the last time the aspens will be yellow, the last homecoming carnival, the last tequila sunrise, the last time the pinecone will drop more things that I will miss come and go too quickly. I have become so nostalgic for this place I have been lucky to call home for the past four years.
Taylor Swift: “Anti-Hero” or “Mastermind?"
On Oct. 21. Taylor Swift released her 13th studio album titled “Midnights,” with 13 songs encapsulating 13 sleepless nights throughout her life. The album was appropriately released at midnight with a surprise 3 a.m. release where Swift announced the “Midnights (3am Edition),” with an additional seven tracks. “Midnights” broke records almost immediately. The day after the album was released, it broke the record for the most streamed album in a single day in Spotify history.
Hometown Spotlight: Eugene, Oregon
Anyone who has heard of Eugene, Oregon almost always brings up the University of Oregon, Hayward Field or the fact that Eugene is where Nike was founded. While these are significant factors that draw people to Eugene, they are far from the best part of the town and far from the reasons I love it. Eugene is a city like no other. The farmers’ market spans blocks and is constantly filled with art that perfectly encapsulates the quirks of the city.
Empowerment Through Elephants
Elephants are very important to me. Not because of their cute trunks or giant ears, but because of what they mean to me and my family. Female elephants have strong maternal family groups that support each other and help the young elephants grow into strong leaders to eventually lead their own pack of elephants. This practice among female elephants inspired my grandmother. Female empowerment was something that meant a lot to her and she passed that down through all of the women in our family circle.
