I led the research team that has spent the past decade mapping the massacres that scar the Australian landscape. When we published the first stage of our digital map in 2017, it amounted to 172 colonial frontier massacre sites in eastern Australia. We were inundated with online comments. Many expressed relief that the evidence of our violent past - of the mass killing of Indigenous Australians - was now widely accessible. Others were surprised by the extent of the massacres.
