A tumbleweed is the perfect symbol for a modern spiritual crisis. Unlike deep-rooted trees, a tumbleweed breaks off from its base once it dies, becoming a detached, hollow shell. Without roots to hold it in the ground, it loses all control over its direction. It is entirely at the mercy of the shifting winds.
