In temperate forests, slime moulds (Eumycetozoa), as treated in contemporary classifications of eukaryotes and myxomycetes (Adl et al., 2012, 2019; Leontyev et al., 2019; Tekle et al., 2022), inhabit microhabitats such as bark, dead wood, bryophyte mats and leaf litter. Within these microhabitats, trophic stages develop within microbial biofilms and detrital matrices and sporocarps are produced episodically under suitable microclimatic conditions (Stephenson & Stempen, 2000; Stephenson, 1989).
