In the carbon capture and storage chain, depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs are attractive options for CO2 storage, given their available infrastructure, proven capacity, and safe long-term storage. (1,2) However, dynamic coupled mass and heat transfer models have shown that there can be a phase transition from liquid or gas CO2 into CO2 hydrate during the high-pressure injection of CO2 into depleted gas reservoirs.
