1 Introduction Topological phases of matter have reshaped our understanding of electronic systems by revealing that global, topological properties of Bloch wave functions can determine robust and quantized physical responses [1-3]. In three dimensions, topological insulators represent a paradigmatic example: they exhibit an insulating bulk gap coexisting with metallic surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry and characterized by an odd number of Dirac cones [4-6].
