Historically speaking, the standard flattop acoustic guitar has not often been considered a jazz instrument. Trad, swing, bebop, and post-bop players all gravitated toward archtop models, with occasional dabbling on classical-style axes; anything else was strictly for country pickers, folkies, or rock ’n’ rollers. This situation only began to change in the 1970s and ’80s with the rise of steel-friendly players like John Abercrombie, Pat Metheny, and Bill Frisell.
