How to add Dark Mode toggle to MacBook Pro Touch Bar
How-To Top stories The homemade Dark Mode button. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac The Mac’s Dark Mode isn’t bad. It’s definitely a better view when quickly checking something on your Mac late in the evening. But unless you have it set to switch automatically, toggling Dark Mode on and off is a pain. So, with a shiny new MacBook Pro in front of me, I decided to put the Touch Bar to use. Did you know you can add your own buttons to the Touch Bar? You can, and it’s totally rad.
How to make Mac screen recordings
How-To Top stories Some Macs may be too old for screen recording, but not many. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac As a Mac user, you already know how to take a quick screenshot with the ⌘⇧3 and ⌘⇧4 shortcuts. But did you know that you can also capture a video recording of your screen? If you’re running macOS Mojave, making a Mac screen recording proves as easy as hitting a shortcut, just like grabbing a screenshot. Older Macs can do it, too, albeit with a little more futzing.

Apple officially kills Dashboard on Mac
News Goodbye widgets! Photo: Cult of Mac Widgets on the Mac are officially dead. Apple dropped support for Dashboard on the Mac in the first beta of macOS Catalina without saying a word. Now it looks like there’s no hope of it coming back according to a recent changelog. Macotakara noticed that Apple removed WebKit support for Dashboard in a recent update. The feature has been disabled by default since macOS Yosemite, but there was some hope among Mac users that it could make a comeback.

Apple starts new round of iOS, macOS, tvOS 'bug fix' betas
Every type of Apple computer got an operating system upgrade yesterday, but the company’s coding team apparently never rests. New betas for phones, tablets, Macs, and TVs were just seeded to third-party software developers. AdvertisementThere’s no new beta for Apple Watch because its OS update yesterday had to be pulled. The versions released today are macOS 10.14.2, iOS 12.1.1, and tvOS 12.1.1 beta 1. There is no word yet on what is included in any these.

How to use Mojave's fancy new tool to create Mac screenshots
You almost certainly know the shortcuts for snapping quick screenshots on your Mac. It’s ⇧⌘3 to capture the entire screen, and ⇧⌘4 to get a crosshairs cursor to select a section of the screen. Now, there’s a new screenshot shortcut in town: ⇧⌘5. And boy is this fella fancy. If this were a western movie, ⇧⌘5 would be the young upstart blowing into town with a couple of Uzis and a pair of Kevlar chaps. Let’s check out Mojave screenshots.
Free NightOwl app switches on macOS Mojave Dark Mode at sundown
If you’re running macOS Mojave (and you really should be), probably one of the first things you did after installing it was to test Dark Mode. The new theme darkens the Mac interface and makes everything look cooler — apart from text, which is just harder to read. But there’s no built-in way to have Dark Mode switch on automatically at sundown. That’s where NightOwl comes in. The free app switches your Mac between Dark Mode and the traditional lighter look automatically. NightOwl is two things.
Group FaceTime returns in first macOS 10.14.1 public beta
macOS 10.14 Mojave is still very new, but Apple isn’t resting on its laurels. It has already released the first public beta of a significant update. Version 10.14.1 isn’t just bug fixes; it’s the first with Group FaceTime, a feature Apple has been promising since early summer. Group FaceTime was announced in June, at the World Wide Developers Conference.
macOS 10.14.1 goes to developers as a beta
macOS 10.14 Mojave launched yesterday, but Apple already started testing the next version. Developers were just given access to a pre-release beta of macOS 10.14.1. With availability so recent, it’s not yet known what’s in the new version. That said, the most likely enhancement is the return of Group FaceTime. Apple promised Group FaceTime would be in Mojave, but pulled the feature out in the middle of the beta-testing process.

Say goodbye to Back to My Mac in macOS Mojave
There’s bad news for anyone who’s still a fan of Back to My Mac: Apple is killing off this suite of remote-access applications. The good news is that Apple’s doing so because all the functionality has been supplanted by newer options. Back to My Mac debuted way back in 2007. It allows users to access files stored on one computer from another. It also offers screen sharing so that a person sitting at one Mac can use their display, keyboard, and mouse to control a remote Mac.

Apple pulls Group FaceTime from macOS Mojave beta 6
Apple just released a fresh beta of macOS Mojave to the public, on the way to a full launch this fall. Betas usually bring new capabilities, but the one just introduced is missing a feature. Apple announced earlier this week that Group FaceTime won’t debut until later this year. It’s now been pulled from both the iOS 12 and macOS Mojave betas.
Apple rolls out new betas for macOS, tvOS and watchOS
Apple might have pulled its latest iOS 12 beta shortly after seeding it, but there are other updates for developers to get their hands on. A seventh beta release is now available for macOS Mojave, tvOS 12, and watchOS 5. As we near the public rollout of these updates this September, Apple is speeding up its beta updates. It will also be cutting down on significant changes to focus on improving performance and stability.

Registered developers can download all four new beta builds from Apple’s online developer portal.

It also comes with a new way to install updates. To install macOS Mojave beta 3, developers first need to download the proper installation file to their Mac from Apple’s Developer Center.
macOS Mojave public beta is finally here
Those in the general public eager to try out Apple’s next Mac operating system can now do so. The first macOS Mojave public beta was just released. This appears to be the same version released last week as the second developer beta. Anyone who wants to test out this early version of macOS 10.14 can do so after signing up for the Apple Beta Software Program. Anyone who previously signed up to test iOS 12 or an earlier operating system from this company doesn’t have to repeat this step.
macOS Mojave easter egg scrambles your desktop
Surely you’ve said to yourself, “My Mac desktop is messy, but it could be messier.” No? Well, someone at Apple has, and built a tool into the macOS Mojave beta to disorganize everything on your desktop. This easter egg is almost certainly a feature needed during testing, but it’s also a sign that the Apple developers are willing to have a bit of fun. The “Clean Up” feature has been in macOS for ages, but Mojave adds Stacks. This collects the various icons into groups.

macOS Quick Look flaw leaks encrypted data
One of the most useful features of macOS could potentially leak some of your most important data. Security researchers have discovered a flaw with the Quick Look feature on macOS that exposes document text and photo thumbnails from a user’s files. And the flaw works even if the drive has been encrypted. IT security specialist Wojciech Regula discovered that Quick Look stores snapshots of data at an unprotected location on the computers hard drive.

Siri Shortcuts in iOS 12 are scary good at predicting your schedule
Apple fans that have been complaining for years that Siri is dumb might be a little creeped out by how much better the digital assistant is in iOS 12. With the new Siri suggestions Apple introduced this week, your iPhone will now be able to prompt you about events you haven’t even told it about. One developer posted his experience of Siri learning about a lunch just through iMessage.
Hey iOS devs, you might be accidentally breaking Apple's NDA
iOS 12 tidbits and screenshots have been flooding the web all week after Apple dropped the first betas for iOS 12 and macOS Mojave. But there’s a small problem with all that. Apple’s Developer Program License Agreement changes quite frequently, so it wouldn’t be a shock if you missed a few lines that Apple added this year that expressly forbid posting screenshots of iOS 12. As pointed out by Gizmodo, the new clause in section 9 puts screenshot-happy devs in a bad position.
Grab all 16 macOS Mojave dynamic wallpapers right here
Dynamic wallpapers are about to change the look of your Mac once Mojave launches to the public, but you don’t have to wait until this fall to get that new new right now. The first beta build of Mojave includes 16 variations of the same majestic sand dune Apple showed off at WWDC 2018. Instead of installing the beta though, you can download them below. A helpful Redditor uploaded a .zip file with high-quality versions of the new wallpapers.
Safari gets its favicons back in iOS 12 and macOS Mojave
Website favicons have finally returned to Safari in macOS Mojave. The teeny-tiny icons, which make it easier to distinguish between sites in open tabs, are also coming to iPhone and iPad for the very first time with iOS 12. Favicons are supported by almost all of the biggest web browsers. They’re the small icons that appear alongside website titles in your tabs, and they make it easier to find the site you want when you have a whole bunch open at once.
Why Apple's low-energy WWDC is actually totally exciting
News Apple's focus this year is on performance improvements in iOS 12, as well as improvements in macOS Mojave, not new features. And that's a good thing. Photo: Apple Apple put on a good show for its WWDC keynote, but realistically it was a lot of hype without much substance. Dark Mode for macOS Mojave and Memojis for iOS 12 was about as exciting as it got. And you know what, that’s a good thing.

Apple’s WWDC 2018 keynote lasted nearly 130 minutes and was jam-packed with new software goodies for developers and regular old Apple fanboys. The star of today’s keynote was undoubtedly iOS 12 and for good reason. Apple is making some big under-the-hood changes to improve performance across the board. Everything is faster. On an iPhone 6s, apps load up to 40 percent faster, the keyboard opens up to 50 percent faster, and the Camera app launches up to 70 percent faster.
WWDC 2018 pushes Apple stock to an all-time high

Despite the lack of any new hardware announcements, Apple shares climbed up to close at $191.87, besting the previous end-day high of $190.04 set on May 10. During Apple’s keynote, the share price shot up to a high of $193.42 before dropping to its closing price. The stock has been steadily climbing since the beginning of the year.
