Lucy plops herself onto the sidewalk and refuses to move. We are a block away from our house. This is her form of protest. She is a 5-year-old golden doodle — too big for me to pick up and carry home, and while she has done this to me before, it never fails to annoy me. This time is no different. I tug at the leash, but she does not budge. Instead, she lets me drag her over to the grass. One of my neighbors has her friends over on her porch. They see my situation and ask if I need help.

This year’s Met Gala theme was “fashion is art.” The theme encourages celebrities to imagine their bodies as a canvas and their outfits as an artpiece. Every celebrity came to the gala with their own interpretation of the theme. A highlight of the May 4 event was Beyoncé arriving in a crystal skeletal dress designed by French fashion designer Olivier Rousteing. She wore a crown and an ombre feathered cape with a long train.

Chicagoan Kathy Kelly travelled to Iraq about 30 times from 1996 to 2003. She stayed in Iraq during the early days of the Iraq War’s two phases. In 1995, she co-founded Voices in the Wilderness, which brought medical and relief supplies to Iraq. The work has put her in dangerous situations. But Kelly made it her life mission to be on the side of peace instead of war. “We live in a permanent warfare state,” Kelly said.
