1. Introduction Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication that is associated with impaired glucose metabolism and disturbance of insulin sensitivity, and it can cause serious health problems and, therefore, has significant implications for both maternal and fetal health [1,2,3,4]. The prevalence of pregnancies complicated with GDM increases every year, reaching 15% of the global population (approximately 18 million births annually) [5,6,7,8].
